Arthur's vanguard, given a new mouth and a new name.
Personality[]
Yorick is direct, informational, and has a lack of social tact. He will answer almost any question asked in his vicinity, even if not directed at him, until directly told to stop talking. However, he also rarely offers information unless specifically asked, repeatedly leaving out details that Arthur finds important.[1][2] He doesn't "offer [his services] freely", and he does not aid his masters beyond what is directly asked of him.
Yorick's actions and deeds are defined by his current master[3], but he does not seem to have any strict loyalties to whoever his master is, as he "aligns [himself] with what suits best."[4] He is capable of deception and refusing to answer a question, and he has his own motivations and desires.
Description[]
Yorick occupies the partially decayed severed head of the prince. Only his mouth and face have small bits of rotten flesh still attached to the bone, and he is missing a few teeth. John describes an "aura" of green wisps of smoke floating off of him as if on fire, and a white-hot flame in his otherwise empty eye sockets. Yorick says this aura is imperceptible to all but the "most powerful". When he talks, Yorick moves the mouth of the head as if to speak, but his voice is disembodied.[1]
History[]
For information regarding Yorick before Part 42, see here.
Once he was given a mouth and a name, Yorick began to participate in conversations and provide directions to Arthur. For easier carrying, Arthur looped a chain through one of the empty eye sockets to attach Yorick to his belt.[1]
In the time between Arthur falling unconscious from the witch's impalement and her casting the spell to hear John, Yorick agreed to assist John in lying to the witch in exchange for whatever he wants.[2] Once the witch is dead, Yorick tells John that he has known him for a long time - "longer than [John] realizes", and that while they may not always agree on all things, Yorick honors John's love for Arthur.[4] He encouraged Arthur to remove the witch's hand before leaving the lair, stating that "a hag's left hand can be a powerful object." Upon exiting the witch's lair, Yorick made his request to fulfill John's promise. He asked to have access to the hag's hand, their assistance in using it whenever he sees fit, and assistance in altering it without question.[2]
When they come across a hanged man in a gibbet, Yorick requested that Arthur retrieve one of the eyes. Once retrieved, Yorick instructed Arthur on the completion of the Hand of Malevolence, and upon lighting, Yorick explained that he is gifting this item to him, as an "exception" to his general behavior of not offering any more than is directly asked of him by his master.[3]
Known Abilities[]
- Information seeker - His power lays in his ability to look through many eyes.[5] He cannot see through the eyes of people who do not currently exist, or eyes that are dead.[1]
- Multiplanar - Yorick has one foot in both the Dark World and Earth. This is unlike other entities such as John, who exist fully on one plane.[1][5]
- Memory access - He can access the memories of the body he inhabits.[1]
- Limited possession - Yorick is able to control bodies that he bites with his tooth.[4]
